Something’s Not Quite Right Here, is what Wisconsin potato growers were saying after spraying azoxystrobin for early blight control. Sure enough, not fungicide resistance but three mutations for reduced sensitivity were found in populations of Alternaria solani by Noah Rosenzweig and co-authors. Phytopathology Editor’s Pick In the April issue of Phytopathology, the impact of the white pine host on the population structure of the invasive white pine blister rust fungus in the western United States is demonstrated. Using AFLP markers, evidence is presented for a strong selective effect on the fungus by hosts having major-gene resistance, but not by hosts with no resistance or multigenic resistance or by different white pine species. MPMI Editor’s Pick In the April issue of MPMI, Malnoy et al. tested the function of three clustered disease resistance genes (obtained from a wild apple species) in reaction to scab caused by Venturia inaequalis by transformation of the individual genes into susceptible apple cultivars. Two genes conferred enhanced resistance whereas the third had no effect. An online subscription is needed to access the full articles.
