Key Research

Phytopathology Editor’s Pick. Molecular epidemiology can be useful in dissecting the relationship between evolutionary processes and epidemic behavior. A convincing example is provided by Lourenço et al. applying a multigene genealogical and coalescent analysis to study Alternaria solani in Brazil. This work supports the hypothesis that the populations of A. solani causing early blight in potato versus tomato are genetically distinct. Read more today!

Plant Disease Editor’s Pick: To Prune or Not To Prune? During the summer, Cercospora leaf spot affects black elderberry trees in Hungary. Imre Holb and colleagues wanted to know if the amount of winter pruning influenced disease. They also wondered if pruning should be the same in orchards managed according to organic standards as in orchards receiving conventional pesticides applied according to IPM standards. Read the June Plant Disease Editor’s Pick to find the answers.

MPMI Editor's Pick. In the June issue of MPMI, Bartetzko et al. show that the XopJ effector of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria localizes to the plasma membrane of host cells and also to Golgi vesicles. XopJ expression in N. benthamiana suppressed host protein secretion and callose deposition in response to a nonpathogenic mutant of Pseudomonas syringae, suggesting that XopJ acts by inhibiting cell wall-based host defense.
